P11: Distance, Displacement, Speed, and Velocity
Remember, vectors require direction.
Do the ODD#
1) During an 86 minute walk at False Creek, a person walks 1235m East, 345 m South, and then 637 m West before stopping for water. Find the distance, displacement, speed and velocity of his journey.

2) Flight CP747 is delayed because of air traffic control problems, has to “circle” for 11 minutes before landing. If the plane travels 3.6 km North, 2.2 km East, 3.8 km South and then 3.2 km West during that time, find the distance, displacement, speed and velocity of the plane’s flight path.

3) A loose buoy floating in the harbour is blown by swirling winds for an hour a distance of 2.4 m West, 3.2 m South and then 5.6m North. How far is the buoy from where is started? How far did it travel? What was the average speed and velocity of the buoy?

4) Darnley drives Eastwards from Westboro to Felixburg, a distance of 325 kilometres, in 5.0 hours. What is his average speed and velocity?

5) A spacecraft travels 10.metres, 100.metres, 500.metres, and 4200.metres respectively during each of the first four seconds after launch. What is its average speed at the end of each second?

6) Joella throws out a runner at home plate from her position at second base, a distance of 48.3 metres, in 1.84 seconds. With what speed did she throw the ball? If the runner took 5.35 seconds to reach home from third, how fast did he run? (Hint: How far is third base from home?)

7) A train covers 0.61 metres in the first second it is under way, 5.92 metres in the 2nd second, 18.27 metres in the 3rd second, and 32.06 metres in the 4th second. What is the train’s average speed at the end of each second?

8) Willie Swift drives a hockey puck into the goal at a speed of 34.8 m/s. From a distance of 60.0 metres, how long will it take to reach the net?

9) A high-speed train between Shin-Obuku and Tokyo averages 284.5 km/h. If the trip takes 58 min and 11 secs, how far apart the cities?

10) The Fawzi brothers take their bobsled down a 2.000 km course at an average speed of 24.83 m/s. How long does the trip take?

11) A police officer sees the flash of a gun in the hands of Terrible Tom, the burglar, 125 metres away. If the bullet travels at the speed of 585 m/s, how much time does she have to dodge the bullet?

12) A caterpillar travels East across the length of a 2.00 metre porch in 6.5 minutes. What is the average speed and velocity of the caterpillar in m/s?

13) A hiker is at the bottom of a canyon facing the canyon wall closest to her. She is 280.5 metres from the wall and the sound of her voice travels at 340 m/s at that location. How long after she shouts will she hear her echo?

14) A motorist travelling on a straight stretch of open highway sets his cruise control at 90.km/h. How far will he travel in 15 minutes?

15) A woman from Pasadena makes a trip to a nearby shopping mall that is located 40 miles from her home. On the trip to the mall she averages 80 mi/hr but gets a speeding ticket upon her arrival. On the return trip she averages just 40 mi/hr. What was her average speed for the entire trip?
Answers:

1) 2.22 x 103 m, 690. m @30 degrees S of E, 0.43 m/s, 0.13 m/s @30 degrees S of E
2) 12.8km, 1.02 km @ 11.3 degrees S of W, 1.16km/min, 0.0927km/min @ 11.3 degrees S of W
3) 3.39 metres @ 45 degrees N of W, 11.2 metres, 3.39 m/hr @ 45 degrees N of W, 11.2 m/hr
4) 65 km/h, 65 km/h East
5) 10. m/s, 55 m/s, 2.0 x 102, 1.2 x 103
6) 26.2 m/s, 6.38 m/s
