Read pages 284 – 287 (snap), and 811, 812 (Zitzewitz). Take 3 column notes for the following terms and answer the following questions.

- moderator
- fuel rods
- control rods
- Candu Reactor

1. What is the purpose of the moderator?

2. Lead often is used as a radiation shield. Why is it not a good
choice for a moderator in a nuclear reactor?

3. What is the function of the control rods?

4. How is the radioactive energy converted to electrical energy?

5. What is enriched uranium?

6. Describe the moderator used in a Candu rector.

7. Nuclear reactors pump water in and out from lakes and rivers. What do they use this water for? Does this water become polluted with radioactive waste? Does this water pollute in other ways?

8. What are four possible problems with using nuclear fission as a power source?
